Hi all!

Sorry I’ve been a little slow on this one.

This week, we’ve covered a lot of content surrounding editorials/magazines, and how/why they looked the way they did. To cap this off, I’d like you to watch another of Steve Heller’s SVA podcasts – titled “Merz to Emigre”—I have uploaded it onto Dropbox. The podcast is split into 2 parts. Both parts are very informative, but you are required only to watch part 2 – as this is most relevant to the content you’ve seen this week. Give your feedback on styles and ideas used and expressed, as usual.

Hi all,

After going over design styles in Switzerland, Italy and the US this week, I’d like you to read 2 chapters from your book on Swiss design and the Milanese style (pages 130 – 146). Comment on preferred work, or perhaps work you were not so keen on. I would also like you to factor in the work from US designers that you have seen in the power points this week.

Hi all,

Please read the chapter on Germany in your text book (chapter 6). It talks at length about the influence of the Bauhaus and it’s main protagonists. The chapter also mentions other pioneering designers, from Constructivism, Dada and De Stijl. Using the examples in the book and notes from this weeks classes, give me your opinion on the Bauhaus at Weimar and Dessau, and the new design conventions. I’m not looking for a synopsis—just your opinions. Are you a fan of the expressionistic layouts and methods of the Weimar Bauhaus, or did you prefer the austere, orthogonal compositions during the Dessau period?

Deadline as usual is Saturday at midnight.

Hi all,

Two assignments this week—but you have an entire week to do them (almost)! Please read the chapter Soviet Russia (44 – 51) in your book, and post a response to the work shown/the theories explained etc. The second assignment is to watch the Steven Heller lecture on Typography titled “Typology”. The link is here. I’m asking you to watch this podcast this week, as it includes a lot of type content we’ve already covered, or will do so in the next 2 weeks—aside from the fact it’s just extremely interesting. Watch it, and lets hear your opinion!

Deadline is Tuesday (Oct 20) at Midnight.

Research Paper or Blog?

Hi all,

We’re past midterm already! Time for you to choose either a research paper or a blog for your outside class assignment.

Choose either an art / design style, such as Art Nouveau, De Stijl, Sachplakat, Russian Constructivsm etc – or a particular artist / designer, such as Peter Behrens, William Morris, Lucian Bernhard etc. The choice is up to you! They must link to graphic design—no fine artists please!

Research paper: 1000 words (about 4 pages double-line spaced), MLA format (see link if unsure – MLA novices click here), 6 sources – 3 web, 3 non-web (books, journals etc). The research paper should cover a designers biography, their professional life and achievements, personal ideologies, and major design conventions and aesthetics. A paper covering a particular movement or style should illustrate the evolution of said style/movement, major influences and artists/designers, and major design conventions. It should also include the movements standing from a social point of view – for example, reaction against industrial revolution etc etc.

Blog: Please use a WordPress.com blog. There should be 4 pages – Home/Bio, Timeline, Work, Resources – Home/Bio: covers basic biography and professional exploits (500 words max.). Timeline: Chronological list of life & professional events. Work: 10 Images of work (either scanned in or taken from web). Resources: citations. Must have 3 non-web citations in addition to web-based entries. Web based entries should be active links. Non-web resources should be cited correctly in the MLA format. As this is a graphic design class—you should also pick a blog theme with a customizable header—so you can put your own title and image in!

Deadline is the last day of class – Wednesday December 2. However, it’s in your best interests to get this done as quickly as possible, before end of semester projects & finals start stacking up!

Hi all,

Please read the chapters on Italian Futurism (pages 37 – 43) and The Netherlands (pages 68 – 75) from the text book. As your blog response, please compare and contrast the two nationalistic styles, and include example reference (page number, name of art work, etc).

Deadline for this is 3.15pm Monday! Hope the studying is going well!
